End Stage Renal Disease
What is ESRD?
ESRD develops when the kidneys stop working well enough for patients to live without dialysis or a kidney transplant. This kind of kidney failure is permanent. Most cases of ESRD are caused by diabetes or high blood pressure. Some problems are hereditary, some reactions to medicines, and some caused by injuries or illness. ESRD requires dialysis or a kidney transplant in order for patients to survive.
Who gets ESRD?
Anyone can develop ESRD, however some are more likely to have ESRD than others. Those at higher risk for ESRD have:
-
Chronic kidney disease (CKD)
-
Injury or trauma to the kidneys
-
Dramatic blood loss
-
Diabetes
-
High blood pressure
How to prevent ESRD?
The best way to prevent ESRD is to prevent Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). Diabetes and high blood pressure are the two leading causes of CKD. Blood pressure and sugar levels should be monitored to maintain kidney health.
